This would be my second ever flight with Air India. The first one was when I arrived in India from London, Heathrow around two weeks back. Everything went smooth during the onward journey so I didn’t find anything to rant.
For the return journey Air India website is giving error for check-in. I’ve tried few times but it continues to show the same error.
Sorry, we cannot check you in.
We couldn’t proceed to check-in, please go directly to the airport counter or try again later.

Air India’s phone support is useless and I never got connected to a person so I gave up. WhatsApp chat support is a bot so didn’t get any help from there either.
Tried checking in on Air India Mobile App, same error there as well.
At the time of writing I couldn’t find any solution so it seems I’ll have to check-in at the counter.
The only good thing is that seat is reserved for the Delhi to London flight so no tension there.
The Resolution
Somehow managed to connect with a real human who explained that since the domestic leg of the flight (Varanasi to Delhi) is operated by Air India Express it is not possible to do web check-in and I’ve to check-in at the counter.
This is weird as both, Air India Express and Air India are part of the same group and as per details Air India Express is owned and operated by Air India so not sure why the web check-in didn’t work.
It is not a deal breaker except that I’ll have no choice on the seat selection and in the worst case I may get a sandwich seat in middle of no-where.
It is also weird as for the onward journey I was able to do web check-in.
